POSCO to build ferrochrome JV
South Korea's Pohang Iron and Steel Co. (Posco), the world's No. 3 steel maker, on Thursday said it had signed a deal with Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA) to form a joint venture (JV) for the production of ferrochrome.
The deal will help Posco secure a stable supply of ferrochrome, a key component in stainless steel, as the firm imports 480,000 tonnes of the metal every year, Posco said.
Under the agreement, Posco will hold a 24% share in the JV, which will run an electric furnace with an annual output capacity of 35,000 tonnes, and IMFA will control the remaining 76%. REUTERS
25 January to be National Voters Day
In order to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process, the government has decided to celebrate 25 January every year as National Voters' Day.
A meeting of the Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved a law ministry proposal to this effect, information and broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said.
Observing that new voters--those who have attained the age of 18 years--were showing less interest in being enrolled in the electoral rolls, she said the level of their enrolment was as low as 2025% in certain cases.
