Corporate Social Responsibility (Project of Tata Group)


Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) also called corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social performance, or sustainable responsible business. The goal of CSR is to embrace responsibility for the company's actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere.
The first name that comes to any Indian on the subject of CSR is that of the Tata Group. The Tata Group feels Corporate Social Responsibility to be the need of the hour. Over a period of time it has been witnessed that corporations die out if they do not support the masses.

Tata is a window into the rise of India. Corporate Social Responsibility programmes at the Tata group of companies extend across a wide spectrum including rural development, community development and social welfare, family initiatives, tribal development and water management. Two of its project reflecting its Corporate Social Responsibility endeavour are -
Stimulating Economic Growth & Civic Amenities and Community Services.
“Tata Steel believes that the primary purpose of business is to improve the quality of life of people. It will volunteer its resources, to the extent that it can reasonably afford to sustain and improve a healthy & prosperous environment and to improve the quality of life of the people of the areas in which it operates.”
Continuously augmenting Town Infrastructure to promote business growth. Tata steel & its subsidiaries provide business opportunities to ancillary units. Institutions such as National Institute of Technology, R.D. Tata Technical education center and Savak Nanavati Technical Institute provide technical and job oriented training.
Promoting rural economy through natural resource management, micro financing and credit and training for gainful employment.
Tata Steel caters to over 600 villages and several company towns in the provinces of Orissa and Jharkhand.
It is creating a ripple effect across towns and villages and has created town services, community development & social welfare department and Energy & Environment Cell.
Today, it is also responsible for environment management, family initiatives, medical services, emergency fire services, airport, mobile medical services, sports facilities, libraries, education centres.
J.N. Tata in 1902 said “Be sure to lay wide streets planted with shady trees, every other of a quick growing variety. Be sure that there is plenty of space for lawns and gardens. Reserve large areas for football hockey and parks. Earmarks areas for Hindu temples, Mohammaden mosques and Christian churches.”
