Mahindra 2 Wheelers, part of the Mahindra Group, is working on multiple scooter and motorcycle platforms as it looks to tap every two-wheeler segment. In line with this, the company said it is open to acquisitions both in the domestic market and abroad, if an attractive deal comes its way in the areas of technology and sourcing.
“We are working on a completely new scooter and motorcycle platforms in terms of styling and engine design. We are constantly reviewing the domestic and overseas market for acquisitions or technology arrangements. If anything looks attractive and help us in growing the business, we will go ahead with it. We want to be an end-to-end two-wheeler player,” said Anoop Mathur, president, two-wheeler sector and member of the group executive board, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M). He added that the future products will have more of Mahindra DNA than what it is today, which he said has already begun with Duro and Rodeo and now the motorcycles.
Mahindra 2 Wheelers currently markets three scooters including Duro, Flyte and Rodeo and has announced its entry in the motorcycle with a 106.7 cc Stalio, recently. Mojo, a 300 cc motorcycle is expected to be launched by January. Citing that the two products are from a completely new platform and co-produced with the help of Italian Engines Engineering and Chinese company, Mathur said, “We will look at maximising the existing platform for a range of products.” He said the company will be launching a slew of motorcycles in between the 106.7 cc Stallio and 300 cc Mojo in due course.
The company has technology licensing agreement with Taiwan's Sanyang Industry Company (SYM) for scooters and has design expertise from the Italy based Engines Engineering which it acquired in 2008.
Asked if SYM will help the company in motorcycle development as well, he said, “SYM will not help on motorcycles.” Engines Engineering has been instrumental in steering the development at Mahindra both in scooters and motorcycles.
The company is looking to export in financial year 2012 and the markets include Africa, SAARC nations and Latin America.
