Shashikant Sharma is defence secretary
Shashikant Sharma, currently a secretary in the department of financial services, has been appointed as defence secretary, succeeding Pradeep Kumar, who has been named the next central vigilance commissioner.
The announcement was made on Thursday after the appointments committee of the cabinet cleared Sharma's name for the post, defence ministry officials said.
Sharma, a 1976 batch Bihar cadre Indian Administrative Service officer who earlier served as director general of acquisitions in the defence ministry, will take up his new assignment on 31 July and will hold office for two years.
FM to review PSU banks’ performance
Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will review the annual performance of public sector lenders and financial institutions in a meeting with their heads on Friday.
“The finance minister will do the annual review of public sector banks' performance in different sectors including flow of agriculture credit; micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) credit; disbursement of housing loans; and education loans among others“, a finance ministry statement said.
Agriculture credit outgo in fiscal 2011 was `4,46,778.98 crore, exceeding the target by 19%.

Bharti restructures India, S Asia business
Bharti Airtel Ltd on Thursday unveiled a major restructuring of its India and South Asia operations, combining various segments including mobile and digital television into two separate business units to improve efficiency.
The new structure will have two distinct customer business units with clear focus on the business to customer (B2C) and business to business (B2B) segments, Bharti said in a statement.
The restructuring, which will come into effect from 1 August, will see Bharti Airtel's mobile, telemedia, digital television and other emerging businesses in the B2C. The B2B unit will continue its focus on serving large corporate firms and data services through Bharti Airtel's portfolio of telecommunication solutions
