Merger & Acquisitions - GE, Microsoft in healthcare software joint venture

The 50-50 venture, which is yet to be named, will initially employ about 700 people and be based near Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond. General Electric Co and Microsoft Corp are forming a joint venture to develop and sell software systems to make it easier for healthcare providers to to store, access and share patient information. The 50-50 venture, which is yet to be named, will initially employ about 700 people and be based near Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington. The goal is to develop open software systems that would allow multiple healthcare providers to track patients -- for example, allowing a diabetic patient’s primary care physician to see how recently he or she has been to the podiatrist to check blood flow to his or her feet.
“Part of the problem in healthcare is there’s so many doctors; there’s so much information to bring together. There’s not a single place for that,” said Michael Simpson, a GE Healthcare executive who will serve as chief executive of the new venture when it begins operations next year. “When you talk about how do you bend the cost curve, it’s not about making big monolithic systems; it’s about joining systems and aggregating the data together so that people can make better decisions.”
The two companies, who would not disclose the financial terms of the deal, said they are rolling Microsoft’s Amalga, Verence and Expresso systems, as well as GE’s eHealth and Qualibria systems. GE, whose core healthcare business is making medical-imaging devices, has been stepping up its presence in healthcare computer systems in recent years. The largest US conglomerate in 2009 formed a joint venture with chipmaker Intel Corp to develop devices to allow doctors to monitor patients’ health remotely.

Cashflow

The movement of cash in and out of a business from day-to-day direct trading and other non-trading or indirect effects, such as capital expenditure, tax and dividend payments.

Cashflow statement

One of the three essential reporting and measurement systems for any company. The cashflow statement provides a third perspective alongside the Profit and Loss account and Balance Sheet. The Cashflow statement shows the movement and availability of cash through and to the business over a given period, certainly for a trading year, and often also monthly and cumulatively. The availability of cash in a company that is necessary to meet payments to suppliers, staff and other creditors is essential for any business to survive, and so the reliable forecasting and reporting of cash movement and availability is crucial.

Cost of debt ratio (average cost of debt ratio)

Despite the different variations used for this term (cost of debt, cost of debt ratio, average cost of debt ratio, etc) the term normally and simply refers to the interest expense over a given period as a percentage of the average outstanding debt over the same period, ie., cost of interest divided by average outstanding debt.

Rupee to stay volatile on uncertain economic outlook

The Indian rupee, that has weakened almost 16 percent against the US dollar since the beginning of the year, is likely to remain volatile in the coming months due to uncertain domestic and global economic outlook, say analysts. The partially convertible rupee got battered in the last one month, hitting a record low of 54.30 against a dollar Dec 15, almost 24 percent down from the year's high of 43.85 recorded July 27. It has been the worst performing among Asian currencies.
'In the short-term, say, the next five to eight weeks, the rupee will remain volatile with negative bias,' said Sanjeev Krishan, executive director at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).  He said the rupee was likely to decline further and hit a new low if economic data remained weak and major policy concerns affecting industry and economic growth were not addressed.  'Currently, we don't see any pull back trigger. If there is improvement in economic numbers and some good news from the policy-making front, then the things can reverse,' Krishan told IANS.  The rupee depreciated sharply in the last two weeks mainly because of increased demand for the greenback from importers and investors, and outflow of capital from Indian equities market amid concerns about slowing growth, high inflation, widening deficit and inability of the government to push forward key reforms.
