Emotional Intelligence and the Heart Take Their Rightful Place beside IQ and the Brain

Compelling evidence recently has surfaced; leading scientists to believe that Einstein's superior intellectual ability may have been related to the region of his brain that supports psychological functions. This new evidence is no surprise to those behind the latest rage in corporate competence - the idea of emotional intelligence (EQ) as a counterpart to intelligence quotient (IQ). Nor is the concept of EQ totally new to successful global communicators, many of whom have refined their emotional and communication competencies to a fine art.

Research shows that emotional intelligence may actually be significantly more important than cognitive ability and technical expertise combined. In fact, some studies indicate that EQ is more than twice as important as standard IQ abilities. Further, evidence increasingly shows that the higher one goes in an organization, the more important EQ can be. For those in leadership positions, emotional intelligence skills account for close to 90 percent of what distinguishes outstanding leaders from those judged as average.

This case is about the marketing strategy undertaken by Tata Motors Limited, (the market leader in commercial vehicles in India, and one of the major players in the passenger vehicles segment), in 2006 to sustain and enhance its market share in the burgeoning passenger car market. In January 2006 the company launched the Indica V2 Xeta Petrol (Xeta) car as a refurbished version of its existing petrol car Indica V2 Petrol MPFI. According to the company, Xeta was to benefit the customer by better meeting their needs compared to existing options in the market - specifically by rendering better fuel efficiency at a competitive price. Indica was an umbrella brand under which Tata Motors had developed both diesel and petrol cars.

Circuit Breaker:

A system to curb excessive speculation in the stock market, applied by the stock exchange authorities, when the index spurts or plunges by more than 5%. Trading is then suspended for some time to let the market cool down. Although introduced in November 1992, it was used for the first time in the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday, 9 March 1993 when the sensex declined by more than 5% from the opening level, i.e. from 2451.20 to 2318.26.

Growth Shares:

Shares of fast – growing companies which show increasing and higher than average earnings per share than the industry.

Clone Fund:

A new fund, set up by a company or corporation, which has affinity with existing funds. Funds of new schemes floated by the Life Insurance Corporation, for example, would be regarded as clone funds.

Godfather Offer:

A takeover offer so attractive that the target company cannot refuse. Usually takeovers result in a change of the management team. Shareholders too, sometimes have reasons to assume that the takeover will serve some ulterior motive of the predator (such as asset stripping, transfer of reserves) rather than uphold their interest. A godfather offer has none of these nasty implications.

How to Conquer the First Impression

When you walk into an interview, remember this: It only takes 30 seconds to make a lasting impression.

Research has shown that the first impression you make on an interviewer really sticks. In one study, untrained subjects were shown 20- to 32-second videotaped segments of job applicants greeting their interviewers. When the subjects rated the applicants on attributes like self-assurance and likeability, their assessments were very similar to the interviewers' -- who had spent more than 20 minutes with each applicant.

Fortunately, there are some actions you can take to help master the first impression:

Timing

Few things give a worse impression than showing up late for an important meeting. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the interview in case you have trouble finding the office.

Ideally, you should check in five to 10 minutes early and always be courteous and professional to everyone you meet -- you never know how much influence the receptionist may have on the hiring decision.

Leveraging Human Power for Environmental Shock

 These days, organizations are facing rapid, often unforeseen changes in their external environments. This transition that the organization experiences to cope with external disturbances is termed as "Environmental Shock". Environmental shocks resulting from major shifts in technology, economic forces, political regimes, or, in some cases, from natural disasters, can create substantial uncertainty in an organization. Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights

The Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) is an international agreement administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO) that sets down minimum standards for many forms of intellectual property (IP) regulation as applied to nationals of other WTO Members. It was negotiated at the end of the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1994. Specifically, TRIPS contains requirements that nations' laws must meet for copyright rights, including the rights of performers, producers of sound recordings and broadcasting organizations; geographical indications, including appellations of origin; industrial designs; integrated circuit layout-designs; patents; monopolies for the developers of new plant varieties; trademarks; trade dress; and undisclosed or confidential information. TRIPS also specifies enforcement procedures, remedies, and dispute resolution procedures. Protection and enforcement of all intellectual property rights shall meet the objectives to contribute to the promotion of technological innovation and to the transfer and dissemination of technology, to the mutual advantage of producers and users of technological knowledge and in a manner conducive to social and economic welfare, and to a balance of rights and obligations.

Narayana Murthy is the Non-Executive Chairman and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies Limited. He set new standards in corporate governance and morality when he stepped down as the Executive Chairman of Infosys at the age of 60.  

Born on August 20, 1946, N.R. Narayana Murthy is a B.E. Electrical from University of Mysore (1967) and M.Tech from IIT Kanpur (1969). Narayan Murthy began his career with Patni Computer Systems in Pune. In 1981, Narayana Murthy founded Infosys with six other software professionals. In 1987, Infosys opened its first international office in U.S.A.

With the liberalization of Indian economy in 1990s, Infosys grew rapidly. In 1993, the company came up with its IPO. In 1995, Infosys set up development centers across cities in India and in 1996, it set up its first office in Europe in Milton Keynes, UK. Search for Losses, Not for Profits

How do we define profits? Most of us know the simple answer that profits are the gains that one makes by selling things at a price more than what was spent in making that thing saleable to a customer. The opposite of this is termed as losses. Profits and Losses therefore, are the two sides of the same coin. Businesses are generally aiming for profits. Recovering from a bad job interview

If you have a bad job interview for a job you really want, writing a timely, fact-filled and enthusiastic recovery letter can show the employer yet again that you are the best person for the job

It can happen to anyone. For one reason or another – a late arrival, botching answers to key questions, failing to show knowledge about the company –you had a bad job interview. Although the proverb is true, you never get a second chance to make a first impression, you do have an opportunity to make up some of what you lost in your bad job interview.

Was it as bad as you thought?

First of all, let’s make sure it really was a bad interview. Often, people are their own worst critics, and this is by and large a good thing. But when it comes to a job interview, you might be seeing things that weren’t actually there, or, at least, that weren’t nearly as bad as you perceived them to be. Give yourself some time. Take a walk, and clear your head. Try to put the interview into perspective. Obviously, things like arriving late are indeed negatives that will count against you, but others are less clear cut. Did you really stutter your way through the most important questions, or are you remembering it to be worse than it was? Were you really caught flat-footed by one of the interviewer’s questions? If you were, did it show? Did you fail to impress your interviewer with your knowledge of the company? Are there several things that were on the tip of your tongue that you were never able to express?  Answer these questions, and you’ll be able to tell yourself whether the interview was as bad as you first thought.

18.98 mm subscribers added in Oct: Trail

Telecom operators added 18.98 million mobile subscribers in October, taking the total number of telephone users in the country to 742.12 million, sectoral regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said on Friday. With this, the overall teledensity (telephones per 100 people) in India touched 62.51%.

According to data released by the regulator, the wireless subscriber base increased from 687.71 million in September to 706.69 million by the end of October, registering a growth of 2.76%.

GSPC discovers gas reservoir in Gujarat

Gujarat State Petroleum Corp. (GSPC) has discovered a “huge reservoir of gas” in an on-land exploration block in Ankleshwar, Gujarat.

“The discovery of a huge reservoir of gas at the Ankleshwar 41S well...could potentially open a new zone for exploration for us there”, a top GSPC official said on Friday.

Qatar’s Tasweeq IOC ink LPG supply deal

Qatar International Petroleum Marketing Co. (Tasweeq) has signed a contract for long term supply of liquefied petroleum gas to Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOC). The contract was signed by IOC chairman Brij Mohan Bansal and Tasweeq acting chief executive Saad AlKuwari on 15 December.

Qatar International Petroleum Marketing Co. (Tasweeq) has signed a contract for longterm supply of liquefied petroleum gas to Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOC). The contract was signed by IOC chairman Brij Mohan Bansal and Tasweeq acting chief executive Saad AlKuwari on 15 December. PTI

Business Net Retention –

This item represents the percentage of a company's gross writings that are retained for its own account. Gross writings are the sum of direct writings and assumed writings. This measure excludes affiliated writings.

Capitalization or Leverage –

Measures the exposure of a company's surplus to various operating and financial practices. A highly leveraged, or poorly capitalized, company can show a high return on surplus, but might be exposed to a high risk of instability.

Captive Agent –

Representative of a single insurer or fleet of insurers, who is obliged to submit business only to that company, or at the very minimum, gives that company first refusal rights on a sale. The Concept of Horizontal Promotions

Ask any person the meaning of promotion and the most common answer would be getting higher designation in the organization with higher pay and perks. Much is lost in the real meaning of promotion when this is the definition of promotion.

In real sense promotion is defined as getting a more important job in the organization, giving an employee additional jobs to perform along with the existing work, bringing an employee to work more closely to the core management, giving greater responsibilities and increasing the domain of this work area. It is not essential to enhance the rank of an individual in an organization before an employee is given higher responsibilities. The definition does not carry the importance of enhancement in designation to make the promotion look effective.  

However, this is easier done than understood. Our concepts on hierarchy are still quite old fashioned because it has been the way the generations have been brought up. We have seen elders in our family; friends and neighbors distribute sweets exclaiming with smiles that they have been ‘promoted’. Still none of us must have asked them as to what would be the increase in their job responsibilities & accountability at the work place and whether the extended duties justify their new designation. Exhibition of this trait by us indicates that the name of post is a big issue for us. May be we feel necessary to suffix our name with a designation (as if the name given to us by our parents is not sufficient). May be from the bottom of our heart we ourselves like to be referred by our designations in the society.

Tata Chem bets big on food retailing

It will soon announce a broader plan to take the business forward through a consumer products division

Chemicals and fertilizers company Tata Chemicals Ltd sees food and farm product retail as a key portfolio in its future businesses. The company, which has made the group's agrochemicals and plant technology firm Rallis India Ltd its majority- owned subsidiary early this year, will soon announce its broader plan to take forward the new busi- ness through a full-fledged consumer products division, said a senior Tata Chemicals executive.

The company kicked off the exercise on Tuesday by launching four variants of India's most commonly used pulses (or lentils) in the retail market. Branded as an extension of its iodized salt brand i-Shakti, these products, according to the company, are the first branded pulses to be sold across the country. Earlier this year, Tata Chemicals had also launched a water purifier--Swach--to tap the growing clean water market.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite, Plasmodium, which infects red blood cells. Malaria is characterized by cycles of chills, fever, pain, and sweating.  One of the largest NGOs in Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal is the Environment Protection Agency. The grant management section of its water division was formed seven years ago. The main functions of this division are to review applications for grants, engineering designs and requests for change. It also inspects the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities. Four engineers, one technician and one secretary-cum-programmer reported to Prem Sharan, head of the section.
