SONY ESTABLISHES FIRST NATIONWIDE ELECTRONICS RECYCLING PROGRAM WITH WASTE MANAGEMENT’S RECYCLE AMERICA

Program Open to All Consumer Electronics Devices

NEW YORK, Aug. 16, 2007 – To encourage consumers to recycle and dispose of electronic devices in an environmentally sound manner, Sony has established a national recycling program for consumer electronics. The Sony Take Back Recycling Program allows consumersto recycle all Sony-branded products for no fee at 75 Waste Management (WM) Recycle America recycling drop-off centers throughout the U.S.
The program, which begins on Sept. 15, was developed in collaboration with WM Recycle America, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc.  The program also allows consumers to recycle other manufacturers’ consumer electronics products at market prices, and may include a recycling fee for some types of materials.

Under the Indicus Urban Consumer Expenditure Spectrum, the bottom of the pyramid in urban India is comprised of households that earn less than `1.5 lakh per annum. This class forms the bulk of the population in cities, but contributes less than 15% of total ur- ban income and less than 10% of total urban savings. Household sizes are typically smaller than in the more affluent classes.
One reason is that there are many migrants in this segment; with little skills and low education, their earning opportunities are low, albeit they supplement family incomes in the villages. Northern states, however, have larger household sizes within the segment.

The latest handset sporting one being the Motorola Droid 3, which has a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Otherwise you are stuck using the touch screen keyboard. But what if, like a lot of apps and online services now allow you to do, you want to use your phone or tablet device as a workstation? Case Study on ITC ltd


ITC was established on August 24, 1910 as the Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited in Kolkata. Initially, the company was involved in the trading of imported cigarettes. In 1925, in a backward integration move, the company started a packaging and printing business. The name of the company was changed to India Tobacco Company Limited (I.T.C. Ltd.) in 1974. In 1975, I.T.C. Ltd., through ITC-Welcomgroup, tied up with the US-based Sheraton Corporation6 to enter the hospitality industry. It acquired its first hotel in Madras (later renamed Chennai) in Tamil Nadu and called it the Welcomgroup Chola Sheraton. I.T.C. Ltd established ITC Bhadrachalam Paperboards Ltd. (IBPL) in 1975. The company started production at its integrated pulp and paper/board manufacturing facility at Bhadrachalam, Andhra Pradesh, in 1979.

In 1990, I.T.C. Ltd. set up an International Business Division (IBD) for export of agri-commodities. I.T.C. started a greeting cards business under the brand name Expressions in the year 2000. In the same year, I.T.C. also entered the fashion retailing business by extending its well known cigarette brand Wills. The retail outlets were called Wills Lifestyle and offered premium leisure wear for men and women under the Wills Sport brand. In September 2001, the company was renamed ITC Ltd (without full stops, and with no meaning attributed to the alphabets). In 2001, ITC made an entry into the foods business, and entered the business of safety matches, where it could use the same distribution network as that of its cigarette brands, in 2002. In 2002, IBPL was amalgamated with ITC to form the Paperboards & Specialty Papers Division of ITC. This was done to "harness strategic and operational synergies." In 2002, the company launched another clothing brand, John Players, which targeted the urban youth.

Service Marketing Mix

The service marketing mix is also known as an extended marketing mix and it is an integral part of a service blueprint design. The service marketing mix consists of 7 P’s as compared to the 4 P’s of a product marketing mix required for optimum service delivery.

Product – The product in service marketing mix is intangible in nature. Like physical products such as soap or a detergent, service products cannot be measured. Tourism industry or the education industry can be an excellent example. At the same time service products are heterogeneous and perishable in nature. The service product thus has to be designed with care. Generally a service blue print is drawn to define the service product. For example – a restaurant blue print will be prepared before establishing a restaurant business. This service blue print defines exactly how the product (in this case the restaurant) is going to be.

Place – In case of services marketing, Place determines, where and how the service product is to be delivered. The best place to open up a petrol pump is on the highway or in the city. Similarly a software company will be better placed in a business hub with a lot of companies nearby rather than being placed in a town or rural area.

Promotion – Promotions have become a critical factor in the service marketing mix. Services are easy to be duplicated and hence it is generally the brand which sets a service apart from its counterpart. You will find a lot of banks and telecom companies promoting rigorously. Why is that? It is because, competition in this service sector is generally high and a promotion is necessary to survive.

The cult of personality


Few brands make the transition from being about a product or service to being about an experience. Those that do manage to create a cult. The true measure of Steve Jobs' worth to Apple and the technology and content businesses is that he helped the company he founded do just that.
The seeds of this cult were sown when the company aired its famous 1984 commercial during that year's Superbowl, the only time it was aired. It flourished through the 1980s and early 1990s, feeding both off and into the counterculture movement, and on the back of some excellent advertising. Among the last was what remains my favourite advertising tagline: bicycles for the mind. The story goes that Jobs was looking up the muscular efficiency of various species and found that humans came in pretty much at the bottom.

AIDA’s theory of selling

The AIDAS theory of selling is one of the widest known theories and is the basis for training materials across numerous organizations. AIDAS stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, Action and Satisfaction.

The AIDAS theory simply states that a prospect goes through five different stages before finally responding satisfactorily to our product.

Attention - Gaining attention is a skill and just like any other skill, gaining attention can be improved upon with practice. A common phrase applicable over here is “First impression is last impression”. The initial attempt of the sales person must be to put the customer completely at ease. Casual conversation is one of the best openers after which the sales person can gain customer attention by leading him onto the sale.

Interest - Once you have gained attention, it is very important to maintain interest. Some sales people are very good in the opening but as the technicalities take over, they become uncomfortable while explaining the product. Whereas others who are strong in the product department might open bluntly but create interest in the second stage. Maintaining interest is a crucial part of the sales process so it is included in the AIDAS theory.


Desire - A sales person has to create enough desire in the customers mind so that he can immediately buy the product. Imagine an aqua guard sales man or a Tupperware sales person, they highlight the product in such a manner that you might be thinking “Why didn’t I buy this product before”. Thus kindling that desire becomes an integral part of the AIDAS selling theory.

Action - Although there may be desire for the product, the customer might not act on it. He might want to buy the product but he might not buy it. In such cases the customer needs to be induced. There are various ways to induce the customer’s needs so that he can buy the product. It is important for the sales person to understand whether to directly induce the customer or whether to push the reminders

Satisfaction – Now when customer is willing to pay, you need to reassure the customer that he has made the right decision. The product is good for the customer and you only presented the product. It was his decision and he is right about it. These small cues post the sales process really give confidence to the customer

Case Study on A Royal Flush

Timons Fisheries in South Harbour, Maine, has been the leading distributor of fish products in the Mid-Atlantic States for the past quarter of a century. Timmons is known for its fresh fish, its frozen fish products and its distribution of exotic fish. Until five years ago, Timmons had experienced continual growth. Although its packaging and distribution workers were unionized, Timmons had been more than willing to pass on to the workers part of the profit made. However, profits have not been very good lately. Consumer demand for Timmons’ breaded fish products have severely declined as the consumer has become more weight conscious. Losing its share of that market segment has meant a financial burden. To help alleviate the burden, Timmons management has turned to the union representatives, its workers, and has asked for givebacks in wages and benefits amounting to $2.50 per hour.
The union feels that the request is unreasonable and that the rank and file will strike if the issue is pressed. Timmons response is that if the cuts are not made-savings that would allow for retooling the production process to regain its market segment- the company will face bankruptcy. As one Timmons vice-president stated, "Two and half bucks less an hour is better than no pay at all. But those union folks cannot understand that".

COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS

Meaning
Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA )  is done to determine how well, or how poorly, a planned action will turn out. Although a cost benefit analysis can be used for almost anything, it is most commonly done on financial questions. Since the cost benefit analysis relies on the addition of positive factors and the subtraction of negative ones to determine a net result, it is also known as running the numbers.  It estimates and totals up the equivalent money value of the benefits and costs to the community of projects to establish whether they are worthwhile.
                    A cost benefit analysis finds, quantifies, and adds all the positive factors. These are the benefits. Then it identifies, quantifies, and subtracts all the negatives, the costs. The difference between the two indicates whether the planned action is advisable. The real trick to doing a cost benefit analysis well is making sure you include all the costs and all the benefits and properly quantify them.

Early Life and Education:

Abul Phaqir Jain-ul-Abideen Abdul Kalam usually referred to as A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, was born in Rameshwaram, presently Tamil Nadu, in India in 1931. He spent most of his childhood in financial problems and started working at an early age to supplement his family's income.
After completing his school education, Kalam graduated in physics from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirapalli. He then graduated with a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering in the mid-1950s from the Madras Institute of Technology. As the Project Director, he was heavily involved in the development of India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-II).

Career:
Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam is an Aerospace engineer, professor, and chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. During his term as President, he was popularly known as the People's President. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor in 1997.
Before his term as India's president, he worked as an aeronautical engineer with DRDO and ISRO. He is popularly known as the Missile Man of India for his work on development of ballistic missile and space rocket technology. Kalam played a pivotal organizational, technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear test in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.

Acquisitions on the menu for Nilon's

Pune-based processed foods and pickles firm Nilon's Enterprises Pvt. Ltd is looking at acquisitions to expand its product portfolio, a top company executive said.
The company is in preliminary talks with two investment banks to help it identify assets said Rajheev Agarwal, director and chief executive of Nilon's.
Agarwal, who also has a 5% equity in the company, declined to name the investment banks or the time frame for the proposed acquisition.

“We have looked at three firms till date, but none of them met our requirements", said Agarwal, who is looking for companies for access to new products and brands.

Nilon's has already spoken to banks, including State Bank of India, HDFC Bank Ltd and Axis Bank Ltd to raise up to `400 crore for the acquisition “Funding is available, but the cost of money has increased by 200 basis points in the past one year, which is a dampener,“ said Agarwal, adding: “The increase in interest rates or an economic slowdown will not hamper expansion plans. One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point".

Password cracker

M-commerce

Working towards a happy future

All of us have great things in mind for our career. But what exactly are we doing to achieve this? Your success depends on how you plan your future at work and the efforts you put in to achieve your dreams.

Most of us have to drag ourselves to work each morning, without feeling the urge to do so. The main reason behind this is a basic dislike for the work. However, instead of cribbing and complaining, have you ever thought about what you want from work? Have you been careful about your choices and made plans to achieve your objective? ·                                 Motivate yourself: Your life and career will go through many ups and downs. It is about how you keep yourself motivated and bounce back again. Remember that downfalls are part of life and only fighters survive and succeed. Be patient and persistent, success will not elude you for long. Meanwhile, be motivated and see how things become simpler.

·                                 Look for opportunities: Opportunities exist everywhere, provided you know how to look for them. Try to look at opportunities within and outside your current workplace. Take help, if required. The most important success mantra this season is networking. So, go out, and network aggressively. Join professional organizations; catch up with old colleagues and classmates etc. Who knows you may just come across the opportunity you are looking for.

·                                 Be easy on yourself: Most of the times, the reasons for feeling sad at work is because of high self expectations. Be easy on yourself and forgive yourself for small misses and failures. You do not have enough time to be sad about past failures. Take learning and forget about the misses. Be happy and you will be in a better position to drive yourself to success. Do not let failure overcome you.

Biscuit firms look overseas amid growing domestic competition


Facing stiff competition on domestic turf, Indian biscuit makers are now looking to expand overseas by forming joint ventures (JVs) and acquiring companies.
While Parle Products Ltd is looking for a JV partner, another biscuit maker is looking to buy a company with distribution capabilities in Turkey, three persons close to both the deals said. They declined comment on the identity of the Turkish company.
Parle is looking at JVs and even investing in greenfield projects in emerging and developing economies, said Pravin Kulkarnii, general manager (marketing) at Parle Products. He declined to provide details of the planned investments or JVs, but said the company is in preliminary talks with Religare Capital Markets Ltd, an investment bank, to look for assets overseas.

Case Study on Tata Motors

Tata Motors, earlier known as Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company Ltd. (Telco), was established in 1945 after its parent company, Tata Sons purchased a plant that manufactured passenger carriage under frames for the Indian Railways, from the Government of India. Telco used the plant to manufacture steam locomotive boilers and other engineering products, under the name Telco. The company also entered into collaborations with Marshall, Sons & Co, UK to manufacture steam road rollers, and with Krauss-Maffei to manufacture steam locomotives.

In 2001, Tata Motors experienced a difficult phase with severe losses due to the decline in vehicle sales, spiraling manufacturing costs and a capacities expansion plan that cost Rs 13 billion. The difficult phase prompted the company to completely re-examine the market and customer requirements. This re-examination threw up several interesting findings.

Tata Motors Ltd is offering heavy discounts and attractive finance schemes to revive sales of the Nano, the world's cheapest car.
The company is offering a cash discount of up to `20,000 and has also reduced the down payment on financed cars to `15,000 from `35,000 for the base model.
This is nearly equivalent to what one pays when buying a motorcycle, said a Delhi-based dealer, who did not want to be identified.
The company is also offering high tenure financing of up to 60 months through special ar- rangements with major finan- ciers.
The ex-showroom price for the base model of the car after the discount is `1,25,880. The discounted price brings it nearly at par with its launch price of July 2009, `1,23,360.
