Bagra appointed as Nalco chairman
B.L. Bagra has been appointed chairman and managing director of National Aluminum Co. Ltd by the mines ministry, according to a statement on the Press Information Bureau's website.
Bagra is currently the finance director at the company. The ministry on Saturday suspended A.K. Srivastava from his duties as chairman and managing director of state owned company following an investigation by the nation's Central Bureau of Investigation. B
New ATC body likely by June
The government has initiated the process of corporatizing air traffic control (ATC) and an independent body to run the services is likely to become functional by June this year.
The move to set up the new entity comes almost three years after a high powered committee, headed by former cabinet secretary Naresh Chandra, had recommended hiving off air traffic services from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and bringing it under an independent corporate entity. The proposed entity, to be called Air Navigation Services (ANS) Corp., is likely to become functional by June, though it would remain as a wholly owned subsidiary of the state run AAI for a few years, officials close to the matter said. Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd (ONGC) has retained top position on the coveted list of 10 profitmaking public sector units (PSUs), while Air India was the biggest loss making state firm on the list of worst performers during the 200910 fiscal, says a government survey.
ONGC, the country's largest oil and gas producer, earned a net profit of `16,785 crore, while Air India's losses mounted to `5,614.29 crore.
Indian Oil Corp. Ltd, helped by decline in expenditure, moved to the second rank among the top 10, pushing down power major NTPC Ltd to the third position, said the Public Enterprises Survey. In the previous survey, IOC was ranked eighth.
“Although its total income declined to `2.8 trillion in the last fiscal from `3.09 trillion in 200809, its net profit increased to `10,220.5 crore from `2,949.55 crore mainly due to reduction in its expenditure,“ it said. P
Vodafone emerges biggest MNP gainer
Nearly a month after the nationwide rollout of mobile number portability (MNP) services, Vodafone Essar has emerged as the biggest gainer, notching up 190,000 new subscribers, whereas state owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) lost more customers than it attracted from other service providers. Since the launch of MNP services, nearly 2 million mobile subscribers have switched service providers using the facility. MNP allows users to change ser vice providers while retaining their phone numbers. “A total of 19,79,600 numbers of subscribers have ported heir numbers so far using the MNP facility,“ according to official figures pro vided in the Rajya Sabha by the department of telecommunications (DoT).
